Experience holistic healing with somatic bodywork through Rolfing. Whatever the event that causes trauma, it is the nervous system’s capacity that determines whether we integrate an experience or get stuck.
This can happen in response to an acute event like a car accident, injury, surgery, combat, etc. It could be from ongoing stress like chaos or abuse in the home or a demanding, fast-paced work environment. Rolfing somatic bodywork results in an increase in the nervous system’s capacity.
Our nervous system is fantastic at surviving – but that means we often sublimate feelings for what we perceives we need to stay alive in the moment. For example, after a car accident adrenaline pumps us up to ignore fear, pain, or vulnerability to allow us to quickly assess for further danger, get help and find safety. If the body didn’t, we might feel scared and burst into tears. When we don’t get to experience all that was suppressed in the moment, it can stay in the body and continue to haunt us.. For example, it could cause anxiety when driving or when seeing the same make vehicle as the one that hit us. These incompletions and injuries accumulate, deepening the tension patterns and taxing the body as it requires energy to hold it all in.
Because trauma and stress are stored in the fascia, together these holistically support the body’s ability to self regulate and heal. Freedom in the tissue and nervous system to optimally respond to the environment, supports greater ease in coping with and staying present to the joys and challenges of everyday life- physically, emotionally, mentally and spiritually.
Somatic therapies posit that our body holds and expresses experiences and emotions, and traumatic events or unresolved emotional issues can become 'trapped' inside.
A core benefit of Rolf somatic bodywork is its potential to resolve trauma and mitigate stress. During a traumatic event, the body’s defense system often becomes dysregulated. If the body doesn’t return to its pre-trauma state, the individual may experience a host of stress-related symptoms such as anxiety, irritability, chronic fatigue, and insomnia. SE helps reestablish the body’s equilibrium by guiding individuals to move through their body’s instinctual fight, flight, or freeze responses. This can lead to a significant reduction in the symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other stress-related conditions.
Reading articles and especially research takes effort… but sometimes you have to do the deep dive. This list of articles and research papers explore somatic bodywork in more depth and describe clinical studies and the other research ongoing in the field of Fascial work And Structural Integration.
Research on Rolfing Structural Integration specifically targeted at stress, anxiety and PTSD is limited, but there are some studies and reviews that have examined the effects of manual therapies, including Rolfing.
